EventLambeth and Lambeth Landscapes met with representatives from the Friends of Streatham Common to look at the common and areas for reinstatement. The main area of damage from Circus Zyair has been levelled and a large amount of soil (50:50 mix sand and soil) has been brought onsite to re-level the area and assist with the re-seeding. The Lambeth Landscapes team were spreading the soil yesterday and will be following with re-seeding today. The areas that fall outside of this main impact will be filled by hand. The cost for the reinstatement has been met in the entirety by Circus Zyair. There are also some other areas on the Common that haven’t recovered from previous reinstatement as we would have hoped so a separate company will be coming onsite to vertidrain, surface dress and re-seed key areas. They will do this once the Funfair leaves site. Bensons Funfair will be arriving onsite on Monday. They have re aligned their site plan to avoid those areas that have recently been instated and will also have track mats down along agreed vehicle routes. We wanted to let local residents and Park users know what is happening on Brockwell Park and Streatham Common. Following the recent events that have taken place and the unseasonably wet weather during June. Brockwell Park Despite precautions set in place by the organisers of the Found Festival the area around the copse has suffered some damage during the build and de-rig of this event. EventLambeth and the Lambeth Parks team have been working closely to assess the reinstatement required and ensure that it took place as soon as possible. Some of that work has now taken place but the ground needs to dry out before more can be done to prevent further damage occurring. EventLambeth and the Lambeth Parks team have met with the organisers of SUNFALL and the Lambeth Country Show to look at ground conditions and any additional precautions that are required to protect the areas that have been reinstated and prevent further damage to the park. It has come to light that there are several areas of stagnant water where the grounds have not been able to drain sufficiently after heavy rainfall and a decision has been made following several assessments with both Lambeth Parks and EventLambeth to ensure the safety of the public that the site area for the Sunfall event taking place on the 9 July will move to cover a new footprint. This footprint will result in the footpath from Herne Hill Gate up to Brockwell Hall being inaccessible during the hours of 09:00 until park closure at approximately 21:00 on Saturday 9 July. Following further assessment of the damage to Clapham Common Event site we can confirm that chain harrowing and levelling took place at the start of this week once the ground had dried out, and further chain harrowing and reseeding is taking place today (Friday 11th) throughout the affected areas. The footpath has had an initial clean and further action is ongoing with Veolia to ensure the remaining mud is cleared off. In addition our reinstatement company has recommended fertiliser to be put on the grounds which will take place in the next couple of weeks to encourage and help the seed to grow. We wanted to let local residents know what is happening on the Clapham Common Event Site, the area between Long Pond and Long Road which backs on to the Basketball Court and Skate Park, which forms no more than 10% of the Common. Following the SW4 event which took place on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August and the torrential rain that preceded and followed it, despite robust planning for wet weather contingencies there was still some damage to the ground surface of the common during the build and de-rig of this event. EventLambeth and the Parks team have been working closely with the event organisers to ensure that no further damage took place and to assess the reinstatement required. On the Tuesday 1st September we and the parks team were onsite with the company who will be undertaking the reinstatement to assess the site and look at the best and most resilient way to repair the damage. Their opinion was that in the first instance the ground needed to dry out before any work could take place to prevent further damage. This is why they did not start until Monday 7th September. They also recommended a combination of chain harrowing which breaks up the surface mud to allow the existing grass underneath to come through and levelling and reseeding of areas that required it. After allowing the ground to dry out, they started with the chain harrowing on Monday 7th September and will continue with the remainder of the work over the rest of this week – until it is completed.
